Team 2: Reproduction and development of aquatic organisms: evolution, adaptation, regulations

General topics

The objectives of our project is to determine molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying reproduction (differentiation, sex determination, gametogenesis and gametes emission, control of the associated metabolisms) and development (organogenesis, neurogenesis and myogenesis). This approach integrates the role of environmental factors in these regulations (epigenetic mechanisms). The genomic data and the functional approaches applied on our models (oyster, cuttlefish, dogfish, eel) constitute an advantage to reach our objectives and raise evolutionary hypotheses.

Research axes

  1. Genetic and epigenetic regulation of development and reproduction
    We study molecular mechanisms controlling development and reproduction with (at?) two )analysis) levels :
    1. genes and gene networks involved in morphological and physiological processes
    2. mechanisms responsible of gene expression

    At these two levels, environmental factors could have an impact on these processes
    The objective is to analyse, by a comparative approach, the role of these genes and their upstream regulations.

    1. the organogenesis, neurogenesis in particular that constitutes a keypoint in the adaptation of the organisms to the ecosystem;
    2. the gametogenesis and the influence of local environment (as the stem cell niche) and external to the organism (chemical or physical aquatic factors).
  2. (Neuro)hormonal control of development and reproduction
    The central nervous system, as the main integrative center of the environmental parameters coordinaes and participates to the adaptation of the physiological processes by the action of neuromodulators released near the target cells and/or secreted in circulatory system to exert an effect on distant target cells. Neuropeptides are among the main neuromodulators appeared very early in the animal evolution. The development of genomics and new sequencing technology allow the analysis of these regulatory systems by a comparative and evolutionary approach concerning several models having an economic interest and located at key position in the metazoan phylogenetic tree (Chondrichtyen : dogfish ; Teleostean : eel ; Mollusc bivalvia: oyster; and cephalopod: cuttlefish; and Cnidarian, Euphyllia).
