"A better understanding of stagnant aquatic habitats used by planktonic crustaceans (Branchiopoda, Calanoida Copepoda) through a multidisciplinary approach"
Although they play a major ecological role, continental aquatic habitats remain poorly defined and understudied. Their wide diversity of forms, combined with an often vague and variable classification depending on the biological groups considered, means that these environments are only partially taken into account. Small habitats, in particular, are neglected in ecological surveys, both in terms of geochemical and physical parameters.
Among the taxa underrepresented in studies are Branchiopoda and Calanoid copepods. Located at the base of food webs, these organisms play a keystone role in aquatic ecosystems. However, their small size, the complexity of their identification, and the lack of specialists contribute to a significant taxonomic gap. Molecular studies also reveal numerous species complexes.
My research aims to better understand small aquatic habitats through a multidisciplinary approach combining integrative taxonomy (morphology and molecular biology), geochemistry, social sciences, and scientific mediation. The objective is to explore the links between biological communities and environmental characteristics (physical, chemical, geographical), with a particular focus on the effects of drying. The “social sciences” component will be based on surveys to document the diversity of perspectives on these wetlands. This work also includes scientific outreach activities designed to disseminate a more realistic image of how these environments function and their biodiversity.
This work will identify habitats of high ecological value, as well as areas perceived as emblematic by local stakeholders, thus revealing the convergences and divergences between scientific approaches and social perceptions.
The combination of biological, geochemical, and social approaches will serve to provide an integrated understanding of these ecosystems and support the implementation of protection policies.
