Quantifying coastal recreational water activities using satellite remote sensing
After a PhD on the contributions of reef fish to human populations and the conservation of fish communities, I am interested in assessing anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems and their effects on biodiversity. In the BIOPAC team, I work on nautical activities, which are intensifying along the French coast without being quantified at a large scale. My project aims to map the presence and use of boats along the metropolitan French coastline using high-resolution satellite imagery analyzed with artificial intelligence. We are training a deep learning detection model to characterize the different uses, in particular by identifying the share of recreational boating that escapes self-reporting monitoring systems. The goal is to better understand the importance of these activities and how their uses are changing in these social-ecological systems.
