Seasonal trends in high-frequency limnological data and resilience of Minor Lake Titicaca

Description

Tropical (16ºS), high-altitude (3.810 m a.sl.) Minor Lake Titicaca is mostly shallow (≤ 5 m in the Bolivian sector) and impacted by a combination of strong climate change (warming twice the Earth average, loss of seasonality) and anthropic pressure (fast urbanization and contamination from El Alto city, Andean glacier retreat). Littoral and shallow eutrophic areas are turbid and mostly colonized by emergent Totora (Schoenoplectus californicus). Offshore waters are rather clear and colonized by submerged Chara sp.. Minor Lake is an excellent site to test whether the widely demonstrated shallow lakes alternation of clear and turbid states also applies in such extreme conditions. We will search for evidence of ‘critical transitions’ or ‘tipping points’ in the chlorophyll-a and cyanobacterial phycocyanine concentrations along a one-year high-frequency dataset generated by our hydro-meteorological buoy in order to anticipate eutrophication and develop an Early Warning System of extreme events (blooms) for the Lake Titicaca permanent observatory (OLT).
