Marathon of the salmon July 10-26, 2015
Since 2011, the national conservatory of wild salmon (CNSS) and the association for the wild salmon, organize each year the marathon of the salmon. This recreational event aims at sensitizing the people to the difficulties encountered by the salmon during its long migration from its birthplace, upstream of the Allier, up to the Loire estuary, where it reaches the ocean. The Loire-Allier salmon population is the last one in Europe still able to perform long-distance river migrations. This population, currently endangered, is submitted to multiple global and local environmental disturbances. The 2015 edition of the salmon marathon will take place from July 10th to 26th. Families, canoe-kayak lovers, novices or confirmed, are all invited to participate to the marathon. Each step is the opportunity of educational, scientific and cultural activities.
Research Unit BOREA and CNSS are joined partners in national and international projects (Sorbonne Universités “Desynchro”, ANR “Saltemp”, European innovative training network “Impress”) on the impact of environmental factors on the physiology and migratory behavior of the Loire-Allier salmon in order to raise basic knowledge for its conservation.
