DYNA: Neurogenesis dynamics in Sepia

21 Oct 2015

DYNA project (resp: Laure Bonnaud-Ponticelli team2) is interested in dynamics of neurogenesis in Sepia officinalis. This project has been obtained from the international collaborative projects between CommUE Sorbonne Universités and FAPERJ/Universad federal of Rio de Janeiro. Funds have been obtained for one year.

The aim is to determine quantitatively and qualitatively the setting up of nervous system during embryogenesis, in hatchlings and adults in order to bring knowledge on the relationships between neurogeneisis dynamics and cognitive abilities at different steps of the biological cycle.

Actually, neurogenesis process during development and growth give the capacity to the organisms to increase their abilities and/or to renew old cells. This process well described in vertebrates remains largely unknown in non-vertebrates animals. We have chosen to study this mecanism in Sepia officinalis because of their continuous growth, their highly centralized and hierarchized brain allowing a rich behavioural repertoire similar to that of several mammals. This project

The project is based on previous studies of the Brazilian partner (Universidade federal de Rio de Janeiro- http://www.suzanaherculanohouzel.com/lab) on Octopus neurogenesis and on our expertise in BOREA on cuttlefish development.
