" Within the Caribbean islands, as exemplified by the French West Indies, freshwater macro-fauna community is predominantly constituted of amphidromous fishes and crustaceans. These species present an obligatory diadromous live cycle, including a larval downstream migration, followed by a marine dispersion phase and finally an upstream migration at juvenile stage. Furthermore, Caribbean rivers constitute the main source of water (>85%) for human consumption. Therefore, the construction of many low-head dams creates ecological continuity disruptions along these systems. The aim of my PhD is then to understand and assess the consequences of these disruptions regarding the population dynamics and genetics (Gobiidae and Palaemonidae), as well as the induced variations in species’ habitat selection and the modulations of matter flow within the river system food-web. The study will take place at different integration levels on a selected set of river-systems: from a micro-geographic scale with focal sampling directly upstream & downstream to the main obstacles of the system; to the meso-geographic scale, with sequential sampling along the river continuum, from downstream the first dam to upstream the last one; both being considered within a macro-geographic scale including other drainage-systems from Guadeloupe and Lesser Antilles. This study should allow the acquisition of biological and ecological knowledge about these species, which therefore should provide key parameter to build up efficient management tools for river ecological continuity, as part of the French national plan for migratory fishes management (StraNaPoMi)."
